Also in 1956, on the Steve Allen show he was forced to sing Hound Dog to a basset hound. He felt humiliated and shouted furiously backstage.
He played only five concerts outside the US, on a three-day tour to Canada in 1957.
Many think the reason he never toured abroad again was that manager Colonel Tom Parker was an illegal immigrant from Holland and would have been deported if he applied for a US passport.
Colonel Tom (real name Andreas Cornelius van Kuijk) had always had an eye for a quick dollar. He held an incredible power over Elvis - most managers take ten or 15 per cent but by the end of Elvis's career Colonel Tom was taking 50 per cent. Together with extra payments, it meant he was earning more than the singer.

Elvis and Priscilla's daughter Lisa Marie was born in 1968. She grew up to marry Michael Jackson and, later, actor and Elvis obsessive Nicolas Cage. He is said to have been the only person outside Elvis's immediate family allowed to see the singer's Graceland bedroom.

His appeal faded in the Sixties. But a 1968 TV special relaunched his career. He did it because when he walked down a busy LA street no one came up to him.
He had a pet chimpanzee called Scatter which liked to look up women's skirts.
Elvis really disliked his famous nickname, saying: "Jesus Christ is the King. I'm just an entertainer."
